Delivery modes and locations explained

There are multiple ways of studying a short course at the University of Edinburgh. People from all over the world join our courses, which is why we offer a variety of ways to learn.

'Delivery mode' means how and where the course is taught, such as online or on campus, or self-paced. We offer a range of delivery modes to enable everyone to study a short course with us, no matter where you live, your background or personal commitments.

On this page you will also find more information about campus locations at the University and how to find them.

Delivery Modes

  • Online (fixed timetable): Fully online with a fixed timetable. This type of course requires you to attend a series of scheduled online sessions. We recommend considering your time zone in comparison to GMT/ BST when booking onto this course.
  • Online (self-paced independent learning): Fully online with flexibility to learn at your own pace. All learning is asynchronous, so you can progress through the course whenever is most suitable for you. This is the most flexible delivery mode we offer.
  • Online (self-paced with teacher interaction): Fully online with flexibility to learn at your own pace. All learning is asynchronous, so you can progress through the course whenever is most suitable for you. You will also have the opportunity to interact with the teacher online via our Learning Platform.
  • In person (on campus): Taught in person at the University of Edinburgh. This type of course requires you to attend a fixed timetable of classes, which take place in Edinburgh in one of the campus buildings.
  • In person (off campus): Taught in person off campus. This type of course requires you to attend a fixed timetable of classes, which take place in a location that is not a University of Edinburgh campus. Off campus courses can take place anywhere in the world.
  • Blended (online and in person): A combination of online sessions and in-person classes. This type of course requires you to attend some classes in Edinburgh, and some sessions online, outlined in the course timetable.
